| Roberts launches the world's first solar-powered DAB radio | |
| 26 June 2008 Roberts has launched what it claims is the world’s first portable solar-powered DAB radio. The solarDAB, says the manufacturer, capitalises on all the benefits of digital radio and solar energy whilst avoiding the cost and environmental impact of disposable batteries. However, the radio does not need to be in the sun to work. Its solar panel and rechargeable batteries will provide up to 27 hours of listening when not near sunlight. There is a solar panel integrated into the top of the unit, which absorbs direct sunlight in order to power the radio. A level indicator on the display screen shows the strength of the solar power being absorbed. The launch of the solarDAB comes just ahead of new EU legislation that will require the UK to start recycling up to 25 per cent of all batteries from September 26th, 2008. The new legislation, which will become law in three months, requires manufacturers and battery retailers to play an active role in ensuing adequate recycling. “The solarDAB is an important step forward for us in our desire to producer greener products. Solar power is an important development, but we’re also looking at other ways to reduce the environmental impact of our products,” said Leslie Burrage, chief executive of Roberts. The solarDAB, which retails for £79.99, comes in five colours (white, black, red, green and pink).
