No nationwide coverage for DAB
06 June 2007

DAB radio is never likely to reach all parts of the UK, according to BBC controller Mark Friend.

Speaking at the Westminster Media Forum, Mr Friend, whose responsibilities cover multiplatform and interactive at BBC Audio and Music, warned that the cost of building new DAB radio transmitters was “prohibitively expensive”.

However, he suggested that using other options such as Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM), which can use existing medium wave transmitters, wi-fi radio and satellite radio could provide a solution for those areas DAB cannot reach.
